Most people dread the thought of window-washing. But it is a chore that must be done sooner or later.

Using the most effective window washing solution makes the window washing job quicker and easier. Rather than spending lots of money purchasing cleaning products that may or may not work, consider creating your own window washing solution that is inexpensive and guaranteed to work when used properly.

First of all, it's important to remember to avoid cleaners that contain ammonia. This was once considered a good product for window washing but if ammonia is included in the product, it may not leave the window as sparkling as you desire and it can damage tools used to wash windows such as squeegees. It's always best to sponge water on the window and wash it thoroughly, then use a squeegee or similar tool to wipe windows clean. Ammonia is also very strong and can cause breathing problems if inhaled.

Also, it is recommended to wear gloves while mixing and applying window washing solution since it can dry out skin and may cause some irritation, even though the ingredients are not considered toxic.

  1. Fill a bucket half-full with warm water.
  2. Add detergent. Water needs to be softened before it can be applied easily to glass. Adding a teaspoon or two of liquid dishwashing soap helps to make the water softer and 'wetter'.
  3. Next, add about 1/4 of a cup of Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) to the water. TSP is a cleaning agent and degreaser that helps remove dirt and residue and can be purchased at most home improvement stores. It is a granular, white substance that is non-toxic and is low in cost. However, TSP can corrode metal, degloss paint, damage stained wood, and damage grout so use caution when using it around these products. Never apply it directly on any surface but be sure to read directions carefully and always mix it with water before applying to windows.
  4. Finally, add about 1/4 cup of white vinegar which will eliminate streaking. Do not use yellow or apple cider vinegar, or any type of flavored vinegar. Only white vinegar should be used.
  5. Stir mixture well and use a sponge to apply to windows and wash thoroughly.Be sure to use a clean sponge when applying water. If you choose not to use a squeegee, try crumpled newspaper that usually leaves a streak-free shine on the windows. Be sure to wear gloves though -- the newspaper print will stain your hands.

Window washing does not have to be a chore when you have the proper cleaning solution to make the job easier. Mixing a solution of water, TSP, and white vinegar will produce a cleaning solution that leaves windows sparkling clean and streak-free.
